Superbugs and the growing risk of pandemics are a major threat to us all. Something needs to be done to change our attitude towards infection control, in particular tackling the risk of acquiring an infectious disease in a healthcare environment.
These diseases already affect millions of people across the world each year and cost healthcare providers billions of dollars. It does not have to be this way. The World Health Organisation understands the issue and clearly thinks that with the widespread adherence to proven infection control procedures the risk of Healthcare Associated Infections (HCAIs) can be reduced by at least fifty percent if not more. So if it is that easy why isn’t it happening already?
80% of all infections are transmitted by poor hand hygiene
You have between 2-10 million bacteria between your fingertip and elbow
Bacteria hide under watches and bracelets – there could be as many germs under your ring as there are people in Europe
Bacteria stay alive on your hands for up to 3 hours
Damp hands can spread up to 1000 times more bacteria than dry ones
